Abstract
Clinical studies on 29 surgical patients with the biliary ascariasis who were admitted to the department of surgery, Kyung Pook University Hospital from March, 1962 to August, 1968 were presented and the recent literature reviewed.
Following results were obtianed:
1) The percentage ratio of biliary ascariasis to the total number of non malignant biliary surgical patients during this period was 12.7%.
2) The ratio of male to female was 1 : 1.4 and the predominant age incidence was the forth decades of life.
3) Important clinical symptoms and signs were epigastric colic with tenderness, nausea and vomiting, abdominal muscular guarding and jaunice.
4) Stone was present in sixteen cases out of the total 29 biliary ascariasis, 4 of which were intrahepatic stones.
5) There were icteric cases out of non calculous ascariasis, worms of which were mostly mummified.
6) In the majority of cases without stone, the liver funciton test appeared to be slightly abnormal probably due to the obstruction of the biliary tract.
7) Six of the 29 cases with living worm had shorter duration and 23 cases with dead worm had longer duration of imfestation in the biliary tract. Seventeen of the 23 cases with dead worm were mummified and the majority of cases with mummified worm in the biliary tract were associated with stone.
8) Stool examination was done in all of the cases by direct smear method. Ascaris ova was positive in 62%.
9) Only 3 cases were confirmed pre-operatively by means of ¥³, oral and operative cholangiogram and cases were strongly suspected.
